In December 2008, the European Parliament voted to abolish the opt out clause to the Working Time Directive. A number of member states, including the UK, opposed the move. The collapse of recent conciliation talks between MEPs, government ministers and the European Commission means the UK will now retain the opt out, enabling UK employees to continue to agree to work longer than an average 48-hour week.
