For me the key points will always be Trust and Honesty without this your working relationship will falter at the first hurdle.
As managers you may not be able to share all the news from the top so be open about this. Making your employee feel part of the workplace gives them a sense of belonging and engages them in the business.
We spend a significant amount of time in our work environment so why not make it as agreeable as you can.
Be yourself, it is too exhausting to keep up a facade!
