Olympic fever has meant that many employees have offered to volunteer at the Commonwealth Games, have you as an employer thought about the effect this could have on your business?
As a volunteer at these games, they will be expected to attend a minimum of 3 training days plus a further 8 days working at the actual games. If you haven’t already you need to communicate to your team how you plan to support them and their fellow colleagues during their absence.
While there is no legal obligation to provide the employee with holidays you could show your support for example, by allowing them to carry forward holidays from 2013 to 2014.
This could have a positive effect on your employees and is also a nice piece of marketing for your company.
Communication is key to ensure that your staff understand what is expected of them and that there will still be disciplinary procedures in place if they take unauthorised absences.
