Managing Employees during the Festive Season






For many the festive season is an exciting time full of family, friends and fun. However, some people might find Christmas a difficult time and it is important that you are able to spot the signs which will enable you to support them.

If you know that an employee may find Christmas difficult for whatever reason (e.g. a recent bereavement, family abroad, etc.) it would be a good idea to meet with the employee and let them know that you are available for any help or support that they need.

If you think that an employee is struggling throughout the festive season there are signs you can watch for; a drop in performance, persistent lateness, overly emotional, poor attendance, a lower level of focus than usual and/or a decrease in energy.

Of course, not all employees will show all of these symptoms so trust your intuition. Ensure your employees feel able to communicate with you, keep an open door policy and address issues as and when you see them.

It is far more effective to manage the problem in the beginning and less time consuming than waiting until they are signed off sick.

Be mindful of different cultures and religions when planning your Christmas celebrations. Don’t exclude any employees from anything; an end of year party should be enjoyed by everyone.
