How to write a great advert

Last week we spoke about how to attract the best quality of candidates to your company and one of the main factors of this was writing an effective advert so that you can build a advert that will attract the right candidates.

Not only does an effective advert attract the right candidates to the job but it also outlines the essential attributes and functions that you are looking for. An advert can act as a basis for interview questions, for both the interviewer and interviewee.

Writing a good advert allows you to think carefully about what kind of candidate that you are looking for. An advert should be clear and concise and also should be easily comprehensible for the applicants.

Here are the main things that an effective advert should include:

  1. The title of the position, term of employment and benefits package
  2. Overall responsibility
  3. Key areas of responsibility
  4. Who the candidate will report to and structure
  5. Information about the company, you should sell the benefits of working for the business
  6. Qualifications (necessary skills and experience required)

It is important that you do not try and over-complicate the language that you use and also make sure that you simplify terms that are used within your business. Although every employee in your company may be familiar with the meaning of a specific term this may not be common knowledge outside of your business.

In an extremely competitive market you should not be asking the candidates what you can do for us, but rather what we can offer you. Include a section detailing your company’s mantra and values, this will attract more candidates to the job role who want to find out more. It is important to try and keep the job description as conversational as possible and try not to make it too formal.
